Why take a breastfeeding class?

A breastfeeding class is more than latch tips. It’s a relaxed place to ask questions, meet other parents, and get to know your lactation team before baby arrives.

Why take a breastfeeding class?

A breastfeeding class is a relaxed session where expecting parents learn how feeding works, get their questions answered, and meet the lactation consultants and other parents they’ll be glad to know later. The best time to take one is before the baby arrives, while you still have the energy to ask everything (usually between 32 and 36 weeks).

If you’ve read about breastfeeding for weeks and still wonder whether you’ll know what to do that first night home, welcome to the club. Books are great at facts. A class is great at the quiet question underneath them: wait, will I actually know what I’m doing?

What do you learn in a breastfeeding class?

The real-life stuff: what the first days with a newborn usually look like, how feeding works, and what to do when something feels off. It’s the kind of information you’ll want at 3 a.m., when the baby is hungry, the house is dark, and your phone is at 4% battery.

There’s no quiz and no wrong question. If you’re wondering something, odds are the person next to you is too, and they’re relieved you asked.

Why does it help to meet other parents?

Feeding a baby can feel surprisingly lonely, especially when everyone around you seems to be at a different stage. In a class, you sit with people in the very same season as you. Hearing “oh my gosh, me too” is often worth as much as the tips! Some parents leave with a new friend to text during those exhausting night feeds.

Why meet your lactation consultant before the baby arrives?

Calling a stranger when you’re tired and worried is hard. Calling someone you’ve already met, and maybe laughed with over a snack, is a lot easier. A class lets you put faces to the team, see how we talk about feeding, and learn when and how to reach out. Every Wellspring consultant is an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant), and we support breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and formula feeding. Everybody’s welcome.

When is the best time to take one?

Before the baby is born, ideally in the third trimester. It’s much easier to take things in when you aren’t running on three hours of sleep. A class can’t promise that feeding will go smoothly (babies didn’t read the book either). What it can do is help you know what’s normal, who to call, and that you aren’t figuring it out alone.
