How do you cup feed a baby?
Cup feeding can be used even with small babies. It encourages good extension of their tongue, which may help with breastfeeding. It is also a good way to supplement with extra milk if you need to, without using a bottle if you are trying to avoid this
1) Have your baby sitting with his head cradled in your hand and head tilted slightly back
2) Use a small cup, such as a shot glass or a small measuring cup as in the picture above
3) Place room temp to warm milk in cup
4) Rest the cup on your baby's lower lip and gently tip up until the milk is like a "tranquil pool",
letting him lap it up at his own pace
As with most breastfeeding concerns, it can be helpful to speak with a Lactation Consultant. Our Wellspring Lactation consultants are here to help, offering virtual and in-home consults to address any of your questions and concerns.
